Spirit Animal Test: your 12 scores

36 questions, 3 per totem, for your primary totem and the secondary ones

Many traditions link animals to human qualities, and those images still speak to us today. This test crosses that symbolism with archetype psychology, across 12 totems. At the end you get your primary totem and the secondary ones, with their scores. This is a symbolic reading and not a psychological measure: we say it here, and not in small print. No email and no account needed.

FAQ

Is it scientifically validated?

No. It draws on a mix of common behavioral dimensions (introversion and extraversion, openness, stress response) and a repertoire of symbols from traditions and Jungian literature. To be clear: we found no quantified study linking a spirit animal to measured personality traits, and our items were not calibrated against any validated scale. Psychology does offer a framework for placing this test: psychologist Dan McAdams distinguishes the traits we measure, such as those of the Big Five, from the images and stories through which each of us tells who we are (McAdams and Pals, 2006, American Psychologist). A spirit animal belongs to these images and stories: a symbolic self-image, valuable for reflection, not a measurement. Results are indicative, never deterministic.

What are the limits of this test?

Three, and they apply to every free personality test. We have not measured the test-retest reliability of this test, so your totem can change from one sitting to the next. People tend to pick the more flattering options, which underrepresents totems tied to less valued traits. And a fairly general description feels accurate to almost anyone (the Barnum effect): the fact that your animal rings true is not proof on its own. One detail specific to this test: when two totems tie, your strongest answers break the tie (the most "strongly agree" answers on their statements, then the most "somewhat agree"). If the tie remains, we show you both as main results, but the totem kept for your share card and for our statistics is the first in a fixed internal order (by the French name of the totem). This test is meant to open up reflection, not settle it.

What is a spirit animal test?

A spirit animal test is a self-knowledge tool that uses animal symbolism to put an image on your dominant strengths, your instinctive way of operating, and your areas for growth. It is not divination: it is an archetypal framework that helps you name internal dynamics that are sometimes difficult to articulate any other way.

The sample is still too small to publish a reliable profile distribution. This section will appear once enough people have taken the test.

These numbers are measured on real completions, not claimed. The time shown is the observed median, not an estimate.

How this result is calculated

  1. Each of the 36 statements is rated on a scale from 1 to 5 and counts toward only one of the 12 factors.
  2. Each factor is scored out of 15.
  3. Your main profile is the one with the most points.
  4. The result bars compare each profile with your highest score.
  5. When profiles tie for first place, the strongest answers break the tie: the profile with the most answers at the highest level of agreement on its own statements wins, then the next level down. This rule does not depend on the name or position of the profiles in the test. If the tie remains, every profile still tied is shown as a main result, and one of them, picked in a fixed order, provides the title, the detailed description and the share link.

The numbers in this rule are not written by hand: they are taken from the test's scoring key and automatically checked against the calculation the test actually runs.

What this test measures, and its limits

This test links how you say you act and react to a symbolic animal, in a reading inspired by several traditions. It does not measure a psychological trait: a spirit animal is a symbolic self-image, and to our knowledge no quantified study links a spirit animal to a character. The link is cultural, not scientific, and most people recognize themselves in several totems. There is no reference group: your totem is whichever animal stands out most in your own answers. It's a game of self-reflection, to be taken as such.

About this test

The spirit animal test is a symbolic self-reflection tool that draws on two complementary traditions: Indigenous North American, Siberian or Celtic traditions, in which the animal serves as a guide or an emblem, and the analytical psychology of Carl Jung, who described universal symbolic figures, the archetypes, some of which take animal form.

This test features 12 distinct totems, each carrying an image: the Wolf for tribal loyalty, the Eagle for strategic vision, the Bear for quiet strength, the Fox for adaptive intelligence, the Deer for noble sensitivity, the Lion for charismatic leadership, the Raven for sharp clarity, the Serpent for transformation, the Horse for freedom, the Cat for independence, the Turtle for patient wisdom, and the Butterfly for metamorphosis.

Through 36 statements, three per totem, on a five-point agreement scale, the quiz looks at how you say you approach uncertainty, manage your energy, position yourself within a group, and respond to change. Psychologists distinguish the traits we measure, such as those of the Big Five, from the images and stories through which each of us tells who we are: a spirit animal belongs to this second family. It is a symbolic self-image, not a measured trait, and that is what makes it a good support for reflection. Your result is not a fixed verdict: it is a way to reflect on your resources and on some paths for growth.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the result change over time?

It can, and your result is rarely a single animal anyway: each statement scores only one totem, but you answer all 36 statements, three per totem, so you end up with a score on each of the 12. Your primary result shows your dominant totem, and the secondary ones complement or nuance it. At the end of the quiz you can see your full distribution across all 12 totems, which lets you identify the secondary energies that are also active in you.

What is it for?

It is completely free and requires no sign-up. You answer 36 questions and immediately receive your dominant totem with a detailed description, its strengths, its shadow side, and its compatibilities. You can also create an account (optional) if you want to save your results and track how you evolve over time.

How long does it take?

The test includes 36 statements, three per totem, which you rate on a five-point agreement scale. Allow about 5 minutes. Each totem's score is the sum of its three answers, from 3 to 15, and the scoring rule is published on the test page. Answer spontaneously: no need to weigh each statement for long.
